September 2, 2009 – His first nomination at the Underground Music Awards, Guyanese artist Michael Sparkey Drakes was honored with the award for Best Reggae/Dancehall Artist of 2009. Sparkey has been working hard to get recognition for his music. This versatile artist moves easily between the Caribbean genres of reggae, dancehall and soca, his voice and blend of the genres is unmistakable.
For Sparkey, both of these awards come at a critical time in his career, to be named as one of the "20 Best Independent Artist of 2009" by Internet Radio Magazine, is a great accomplishment for this Caribbean artist.
These awards cap a two year marketing endeavor, that saw the artist sign with WOA International in India, and win "Best International World Male Artist" and Best International World CD Album" for the release of his first solo CD, "Sparkey & Friends Back 2 Basics" out now on W.O.A Records, a combination of reggae, dancehall and soca.
